Dr. Charles Cohen joined Advent's healthcare and life sciences venture capital team in mid-2003 and has more than 25 years' experience in the biotechnology industry. He has co-founded or served as a senior executive or board member of seven biotechnology companies: Creative BioMolecules Inc., Exelixis Inc., Xenon Genetics Inc., Anadys Pharmaceuticals Inc., Aureon BioSciences Inc., Cellzome, Inc. and Archemix Inc. Three of these - Exelixis, Anadys and Cellzome - are Advent portfolio companies. Dr. Cohen was president and CEO of Cellzome for two years and is currently its chairman.
From January 1998 to December 2001, he was a special advisor to PaineWebber Inc., where he served as a director of several clinical R&D partnerships, including those affiliated with Genzyme Corp., Cephalon Inc., Alkermes Inc. and ICOS Corp.
For 13 years, Dr. Cohen held senior management positions at Creative BioMolecules, first as vice president and scientific director, then as chairman, president and CEO from June 1985 to July 1995. Prior to Creative BioMolecules, he was a research manager and senior scientist at Waters Corp./Millipore Corp.
Dr. Cohen is a member of the Advisory Council of Harvard Medical School's Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, and a member of Fondation Santé.
He received a BA from the University of New York at Buffalo, a Ph.D from the New York University School of Medicine and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Cohen is currently a member of the board of directors of Exelixis, Inc., Xenon Genetics, Inc., Anadys Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Aureon BioSciences, Inc., Cellzome, Inc., and Archemix, Inc.
